Thanks to the internet, you no longer have to physically tour apartment after apartment to find the one that suits your needs, your lifestyle, and your budget. To help make your hunt for the perfect luxury apartment in Hickory as convenient as possible, The Legends offers virtual apartment tours that can be taken anytime and anywhere you have an internet connection. Do you know what to be on the lookout for when you a luxury apartment virtual tour?

In today’s post, we’ll review seven must-have amenities that will make you feel like a star from the time you pull into our community until you step foot into your own apartment. Check them out below, then take your own online tour of our luxury apartments today!

Five-Star Luxury Apartment Amenities

9-Foot Vaulted Ceilings

At first glance, the height of the ceiling in your apartment might not seem like that big of a deal. However, studies have shown that higher ceilings can make interior spaces look bigger than they are. While many apartments with outdated construction have flat, 8-foot ceilings, we are happy to say that our units have vaulted, 9-foot ceilings here at The Legends. Beyond making your apartment feel more spacious, you will actually have extra room overhead to accommodate tall furniture like four-poster beds, bookcases, and entertainment centers.

Oversized Closets

An inherent lack of closet space is one of the biggest concerns for many apartment dwellers. This is not a surprise given that some apartments might only have a single closet that seems no bigger than a matchbox for the entire unit. As you are taking your luxury apartment virtual tour, pay close attention to how much closet space each unit offers. The luxury apartments at The Legends boast some of the most spacious closets in town. That means you’ll never have to try to figure out how to integrate your storage items into your apartment’s decor because your closets are too small.

If you have lived in Hickory for long enough to experience a winter season here, then you know that average low temperatures can dip down into the 30s and sometimes even into the 20s. A fireplace might not be on your list of must-have amenities, but you’ll be glad you have one when the cold weather settles in for the season. As you take our virtual apartment tours, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a fireplace. Several of the units at The Legends include a fireplace, and if this is an amenity you’d like to have, just let us know and we’ll be happy to help make it happen when possible.

Large Patios and Balconies

Just as the weather can be chilling during the winter in Hickory, it can also be unbelievably gorgeous in the spring, summer, and fall. There is no better way to enjoy the mild temperatures and abundant sunshine during these times of year than by hanging out with your friends on your patio or balcony. However, if your new apartment has a patio or balcony that is too small, you might find your outdoor entertainment options limited. As you take your luxury apartment virtual tour of The Legends, you’ll be pleased to see that each of our apartments comes with either a large patio or a large balcony to help you make the most of your time outdoors.

Incredible Fitness Center

This is one amenity that is on nearly everyone’s checklist, and for good reason. Having a conveniently located fitness center makes it easier than ever to keep up with your health and fitness goals, which is something virtually everyone could use some help with every now and then. In addition to looking for a state-of-the-art fitness center during your virtual apartment tours, keep an eye out for other fitness amenities also. As you tour The Legends, you’ll note that we have two resort-style swimming pools, two tennis courts, a basketball court, and a volleyball court in addition to our incredible fitness center.

Covered Parking

Residents love the mild climate that we experience most of the year here in Hickory. However, there are times we experience severe thunderstorms and other types of inclement weather that could damage your vehicle if it is parked out in the open. It is times like these when apartment renters appreciate having covered parking, and many individuals place having a garage high on their list of priorities as they are looking for a new apartment. We are happy to offer garages here at The Legends. Not only will a garage help protect your car from weather damage, but it will also ensure it is safe and secure when you aren’t driving it.

Entertainment Space

Last but not least, you want to be sure that the apartment community you are thinking about moving into has some kind of entertainment space for you to enjoy with any guests that come to visit you. Whether it is a clubhouse that you can rent out for gatherings or some other type of communal space, this is a desirable benefit that luxury apartment communities in Hickory should offer. As you tour The Legends, you’re likely to notice our state-of-the-art theater room that is available for residents to use. Complete with an extra wide screen, surround sound, and other essential features, our theater room is the perfect spot to have a night in with a few of your closest friends or family members.

Tips for Lowering Your Energy Bill Hickory Apartments

Apartments in Hickory: Tips for Lowering Your Energy Bill

Tips for Lowering Your Energy Bill Hickory Apartments

While we don’t experience winters that are as harsh as they are in other parts of the country, we still see our fair share of chilly weather during the winter months. Many people, including those who rent apartments in Hickory, anticipate slightly higher energy bills during this time of year. However, there are a few simple steps you can take to make your apartment as energy-efficient as possible. If you are one of the many individuals who are living in a luxury apartment on a budget, then today’s post is for you. Check out six energy-saving tips from The Legends Luxury Apartments below!

6 Tips for Energy-Efficient Living in Your Hickory Apartment

Adjust Your Thermostat

One of the easiest ways to control energy expenses for your apartment is to adjust your thermostat to a comfortable temperature and leave it at that setting. This is because the biggest part of your energy bill is based oh how warm you keep it in your apartment — the higher the temperature on your thermostat, the harder the furnace has to work. Lowering the thermostat a few degrees and keeping a few extra throw blankets around can make a big difference, as can having set temperatures for daytime and nighttime hours. This can easily be configured if your unit has a programmable thermostat.

Change Your Light Bulbs

It might seem silly that something as small as a light bulb can have any type of influence on your energy costs, but they really can. If your light fixtures and lamps have standard incandescent bulbs, try switching them out for more energy-efficient bulbs like LED and CFL bulbs. Using CFL bulbs in the lights that you use most frequently can be highly beneficial because they use less electricity to produce comparable amounts of light and they last longer than traditional light bulbs. For example, a 13-watt CFL light bulb generates the same amount of illumination as a 60-watt incandescent bulb, allowing you to save money and enjoy a well-lit apartment at the same time.

Use Your Ceiling Fan Wisely

Ceiling fans are one of the most desired features in homes and luxury apartments alike. This is because they do a great job of circulating air to keep your indoor temperatures comfortable all year round. For example, during the summer months, you can use your ceiling fan to create a wind chill effect by having the fan run in a counterclockwise rotation to push air straight down. In the winter, switch the rotation setting so that the blades turn clockwise. This gently pulls the room air upward, forcing warm air down from the ceiling. When used in conjunction with adjusting your thermostat, this is one of the easiest ways to lower the energy costs for your apartment during the winter.

Be Smart in the Kitchen

The kitchen is the one room in your apartment that is likely to use the most energy. Because there are several large appliances that run on electricity and tend to make your place warmer when they are in use, being smart in the kitchen can help you curb energy expenses as much as possible. For example, you can use the microwave instead of the stove to boil water. Not only is it faster, but it uses less electricity. Using your oven after the sun has gone down in the summer can help you keep your apartment cooler, reducing the load on your air conditioner. You can also turn off the heated drying setting on your dishwasher and allow your dishes to air dry for even less energy consumption.

Only Do Full Loads of Laundry

It might seem counter-intuitive to only do full loads of laundry in order to save on your utility bill, however this can be an effective strategy to lowering your energy costs. The key here is to ensure that your loads of laundry are neither too small or too big. If they are too small, then you are wasting more water than you need to during the washing process. If they are too large, then you are using more energy than necessary to dry them. However, a full load of laundry reduces water waste and dries efficiently. Additionally, gone are the days when you have to use warm or hot water to wash your clothes — today’s detergents are designed to dissolve just as well in cold water as they do in warm water, and washing on the cold setting can increase your energy savings even more.

Turn Off the Lights

Finally, this one might seem like a no-brainer, but it can be one of the hardest things for some of us to do. No, we aren’t saying that you have to live in darkness in your luxury apartment in Hickory. However, when you are preparing to leave for the day, take a quick trip around your place to make sure that you have turned off all of the lights. If you have been using your ceiling fan, then you want to make sure that has been turned off also. To take this tip one step further, some residents turn off appliances that use standby power to enhance their energy savings even more. Things like your computer, television, and other electronics don’t need to be kept on when they aren’t being used, and turning them off can make a big impact on your energy bill.

Luxury Apartments in Hickory

Are you living in a luxury apartment on a budget? If so, then you want to do everything you can to make your money go as far as possible. As always, the team here at The Legends will do everything we can to make sure your experience with us is the best, which is why we perform simple tasks like changing out air filters and monitoring hot water heater settings to ensure your apartment is as energy-efficient as possible. Tips for Renting Your First Hickory Apartment

Here at The Legends Luxury Apartments, we love helping individuals find the Hickory apartment of their dreams, and our amazing amenities only make the deal that much sweeter. Check out a few helpful tips for first-time apartment renters below, then contact us to learn more about our award-winning apartment community!

Apartment Renting Tips

Consider Your Budget

Budgeting for your new Hickory apartment is probably the most important part of apartment hunting. After all, you don’t want to have the apartment you’ve been dreaming about and no money to furnish it or go out with your friends. Many financial experts recommend keeping your rent payment within 25 to 30 percent of your take-home pay. This total should include utilities, fees, and other recurring expenses. Our front office is happy to provide you with a complete list of what expenses are covered by your rent to help you plan for your new luxury rental.

Determine Your Needs

Taking tours of apartments can be very exciting, especially when you are looking for your first rental ever. However, be careful not to get too carried away with what you want versus what you need. For example, if you don’t have a vehicle, you want to look for a Hickory apartment that is close to public transportation. If you plan on bringing a pet with you, be sure to look for rentals that are pet-friendly. Thankfully, The Legends is both pet-friendly and just a short walk away from the GreenWay bus route!

View Photos and Take a Virtual Tour

Touring apartment communities can be fun and exciting, but it can also be time-consuming if you have more than a few communities you want to check out. Viewing photos of apartments online can help you determine which communities are worthwhile to check out and which ones you can skip. Thanks to technology, many apartment communities (including ours!) offer virtual tours online. These tours can give you a good idea of what types of finishings and amenities a community has to offer before you schedule an on-site tour.

Read the Lease!

Once you find the perfect Hickory apartment, the big day will come when it is time to sign the lease. This is a big step, especially for your very first apartment. However exciting it may be, be sure to take the time to read and understand the terms and conditions in your lease. If there is any part of the lease you don’t understand, ask the community manager to talk it through with you to make sure you are on the same page. Additionally, you want to make sure the rent, deposit, and pet fees are clearly spelled out and the same that you were quoted during your tour.

Don’t Forget Renter’s Insurance

Finally, don’t forget to contact your local insurance agent to get a quote on renter’s insurance. No one likes to think about things like fires, theft, and water damage, but these things happen, even in the most secure communities. Renter’s coverage is designed to replace or reimburse you for personal property in your apartment that is damaged in the event of a covered loss, and rates are often between $10 and $30 each month. This is a small price to pay, and a requirement for some apartment communities, to ensure your property is protected against loss.

At The Legends Luxury Apartments in Hickory, we are here to make renting an apartment as easy as possible, and we are happy to answer any questions you have about our application process. Just give us a call at 828-304-0081 or contact us online! In the meantime, let’s review a few items that are good to have on hand when applying for an apartment.

6 Items Needed For an Apartment Application

Personal Identification

This might seem like a no-brainer, but it is worth reviewing. Be sure to have your personal identification documentation ready when you apply for your apartment. The apartment managers need to know your name, current address, phone number, and social security number to confirm you are a legal citizen. These items also facilitate credit checks and background checks to confirm you are an eligible applicant.

Pay Stubs and Bank Statements

Apartments in Hickory are in high demand, and landlords want to be sure that the applicants they are considering make enough money to pay rent on time. You may be asked to provide two or more of your most recent pay stubs to document that you have a steady stream of income. If you are unable to furnish pay stubs for some reason, you may be asked to provide bank statements to show that you have the money necessary to afford monthly rent.

Employment History

Aside from providing pay stubs and bank statements to show that you can afford the rent for your new apartment, your prospective landlord may also want to review your job history. This is another way of vetting applicants to help weed out unreliable renters. Generally speaking, the more stable your job history is, the more financially stable you are likely to be, and landlords prefer financially stable tenants.

Car Registration and Proof of Insurance

You might be wondering what vehicle registration and car insurance have to do with renting an apartment. Landlords often ask for this information to keep tabs on how many cars they can expect in the complex parking lot at any given time. This can help reduce the number of unapproved cars in the parking lot, and it also makes it easier for the landlord to contact you with any concerns related to your vehicle.

Rental History and References

Just as prospective employers want to see your employment history, prospective landlords want to see your rental history. This information should include details such as the rental address, your former landlord’s name and phone number, how long you lived there, and why you moved out. In addition to this documentation, landlords often request references that can be contacted to confirm that you will be a reliable tenant.

Money For a Deposit

Once you find your dream apartment in Hickory, you want to make sure that it is reserved only for you. That means you will need some way of putting down a deposit on it when you are filling out the apartment application. A deposit secures your interest in the apartment, taking it off the market until you sign the lease to ensure no one else gets the apartment while you are waiting on your application to be approved.

Apartments In Hickory — Prepping Your Home for the Holidays

The spooky nights of October are behind us, and that can only mean one thing: the holiday season is upon us! Here at the Legends Apartments in Hickory, we want to do everything we can to make sure your 2018 ends on a good note so you can welcome the upcoming new year in high spirits. Whether you are planning on sticking around Hickory in November and December, or you are planning on taking an extended vacation to visit family and friends, there are a few quick and easy things you can do to make the most of the holidays and ensure your apartment is in great condition upon your return.

Preparations If You Are Staying

Make It Festive With Decor

It simply doesn’t feel like the holiday season until you have put up some holiday decorations in your apartment. Fresh squash and pumpkins make for beautiful table decor during the fall, and you can get them just about anywhere. They last for a long time, and you can eat them when you are ready to swap out your fall decorations for winter decorations. Setting out cinnamon-scented candles or potpourri will make your place smell like the holidays, and incorporating string lights and ornaments into your decor will bring an unmistakable element of festivity to your space.

Determine What You Need for Hosting

If you are having family or friends over for holiday meals, it is important to plan ahead so that you have all that you need to ensure everything goes according to plan. Do you have enough chairs and is your table large enough to accommodate everyone comfortably? If you have an overnight guest, will they have a place to sleep? Does your floor plan have enough square footage for everyone? While you might not be able to upgrade your floor plan, thinking about these details well in advance can help reduce your stress and help you avoid embarrassing moments as a host.

Remember On-Site Legends Amenities

If you are planning on having visitors over, but you aren’t planning on making a big meal for everyone to share, remember that our apartments in Hickory have plenty of on-site amenities to keep everyone busy. Our spacious, high-tech theater room features comfortable chairs and surround sound, making it the perfect spot to hang out and watch a movie with friends and family. Feel like breaking a sweat? Our state-of-the-art fitness center features treadmills, ellipticals, and weight machines to ensure that all those holiday parties and meals don’t get the best of you.

Preparations If You Are Leaving Town

Unplug Appliances

Whether you are headed out of town for a few days or a couple of months, unplugging your appliances is a good idea while you are out of town. This is because appliances use electricity if they are plugged in, even if they are turned off. This can present a fire hazard if items are plugged in during a long absence, but it can also increase your electric bill unnecessarily. Of course, we aren’t advising you to unplug your refrigerator, but you might consider unplugging small appliances like the microwave, toaster, video game consoles, and televisions.

Adjust the Thermostat

You might like your apartment to be warm and toasty while you are in town, but when you are away, the heat doesn’t need to constantly run. Lowering your thermostat can be beneficial for a couple reasons. First, it helps conserve energy, and that can result in a lower heat bill. Second, it prevents unnecessary wear and tear on the furnace that heats your unit. Lower your thermostat to around 60 degrees before you leave for your trip. This will ensure there is plenty of warmth for plumbing while reducing energy waste.

Take Out the Trash

This is something that many people don’t think about before they leave town. However, it is certainly something you will wish you would have done if you come home to a stinky apartment. Before you take out the trash, it is also a good idea to get rid of any produce on your counters and any leftovers in the refrigerator. Doing so will prevent your apartment from taking on some unpleasant odors in your absence, and removing any sources of food goes a long way in preventing pests.

There is nothing better than staying home for the holidays, other than coming home after a long trip visiting friends and family. The Legends Luxury Apartments in Hickory is one of the best places to come home to, and once you rent one of our prestigious apartments, we are confident that you will feel the same. A Few Tips For Living Alone For The First Time In Your Life

A Few Tips For Living Alone For The First Time In Your Life

A Few Tips For Living Alone For The First Time In Your Life

So, you are out on your own for the very first time. Maybe you are in your early twenties, or perhaps you are in your early thirties and have never even had the chance to live by yourself before. Either way, the prospect of doing so can be exciting yet intimidating all at once. That is the nature of being self-sufficient — there’s some inherent risk/reward in providing for yourself.

In today’s post, we’d like to provide our readers with a few tips for living alone for the first time, as the title no doubt already gave away. And while we at The Legends are proud to provide residents of our Hickory luxury apartment complex with the most prestigious and elegant amenities and features around, we recognize that there is more to life than having access to a suite of luxurious facilities and services.

Even still, being able to call The Legends home is nothing to turn your nose up at — especially if you are living alone for the first time in your life. We’d argue that our pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, theater room, and other community amenities provide our residents with the chance to socialize with each other at their convenience!

But we digress. Keep reading to receive a few tips about living alone for the first time!

  • You’ll learn a lot about yourself – Fair warning, not everything you learn will be pleasant. You might realize that it’s been your all too kind (and non-confrontational) roommate these years who has been keeping your living quarters somewhat presentable — not you. You might need some practice taking care of yourself by giving yourself the gift of having a clean space to live in. That’s something that can do wonders for your mental health!
  • You just might impress yourself too – It probably won’t be all bad, though. Living on your own for the first time means you get to stretch your wings and maybe challenge yourself. You need to learn to be okay with being by yourself. You need to be okay with the silence. You need to be okay with being left alone to your own thoughts. We rarely have time for genuine self-reflection these days, and living by yourself is a wonderful opportunity to do exactly that. Remember, however, that your smartphone is not your roommate. Don’t waste away every single evening on social media.
  • You get to do whatever you want! – On a lighter note, there’s something to be said for genuine independence. Even if you haven’t been living with your parents for years, it’s a pretty amazing feeling being able to be completely free to make your own plans on a whim.
  • Spend some time to learn about yourself – At the risk of sounding cheesy, we really mean it! You have the incredible opportunity to make your free time whatever you want to be. You also have your own space, free of judgmental eyes at that. If you want to learn to dance, woodwork, or play the French horn, knock yourself out! Nobody is watching. Although, we must say, in reference to the French horn playing, your neighbors might be able to hear you. Our walls are remarkably sound-absorbing here at The Legends, but even soundproof walls have their limits!
  • Remember who you are and whose you are – We frankly refuse to apologize for our cheeziness. Don’t lose sight of your roots, even though you might be far from your family and other loved ones. You might get caught up in a new job, school, or group of friends. Just don’t forget where you came from in an instant!

Consider The Legends

If you’ve been looking for the perfect Hickory apartment, we’ve got you covered. Between our spacious rooms and elegant facilities, we make apartment living remarkably smooth and pleasant — whether you’ve been living on your own for years or want to move in with your partner. Life In Hickory

What’s more, Hickory, NC, is a wonderful place to be able to live. From boating on Lake Hickory to experiencing why Hickory has been named one of top cities to travel to (specifically that it’s “Hipster-friendly” — whatever that means!) to trying one of our many fantastic restaurants, it’s great. Sadly, we don’t have enough time in today’s post to give a complete representation of what makes life in Hickory so special, so we’d encourage you to browse through our past posts to get a better feel for Hickory activities!

Apartment Living Tips

Whether you have been living in apartments for years or you’ve just set out on your own and are excited to see what living alone is all about, today’s post might have something for you. We hope you enjoy this practical, if not arbitrary set of tips that concern your wellness and everyday living habits. Enjoy!

Let’s Start With Some Light Stretching

If you are of the ilk that tend to sit behind a desk all day, the odds are you could use some semi-regular stretching to feel your best. Your muscles are probably too tight from day after day of key-punching (the modern-day equivalent of pen-pushing, we presume) and sitting on your rump, you might deal with shoulder, back, neck, or leg issues.

We aren’t doctors or physical therapists, let’s get that clear. We are advocates of your health though, so that’s why we’ll tell you to get a foam roller and a yoga mat (you don’t have to do Yoga unless you want to, don’t worry). Next, target the area that is giving you issues, and roll that muscle out by putting some weight on it while you go back and forth with the roller. See? No yoga required, although we will warrant that doing some yoga from time to time will help you feel great. Plus, you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own home to do it. Keep in mind, however, that The Legends Apartments of Hickory offer a first-class fitness center onsite — you know, if that’s your thing.

Control Your Humidity Levels

You might be well familiar with the fact that the humidity level of your home can dramatically impact the health of your hair, skin, and general well-being, but you probably did not know that it can also affect the health of your home itself? Whether you call our luxury HIckory apartments home or not, the humidity levels of your home should be right around 45 percent. Anything above 50 percent is too high, and anything under 30 percent is way too dry and will likely lead to dry skin and worse.

But determining if you are in that range isn’t always practical. But there are easy ways to tell if you are in a good range. If you are too humid, you’ll probably see condensation build on windows along with moisture and even mold on the walls. If your humidity level is too low, there might be an increase in static electricity, along with dried out millwork and paint. Here in North Carolina, we run a lot of AC because of the heat and humidity outside, so our issue ironically has to do with the former. We recommend going with a humidifier in order to solve this issue. Getting a decently affordable and portable humidifier will let you choose between warm and cold mist — so it will be comfortable the whole year round. Keep in mind, however, that most portable humidifiers are not without their upkeep, as the reservoir should be filled every day or so.

Luckily, The Legends Apartments is able to keep your environmental settings at optimal levels nearly 100 percent of the time. That’s just one more reason our residents love to call our Hickory community home!

De-Stress Your Bedroom

We do our absolute best to make sure you are set up with a calming, elegant bedroom and apartment in general, here at The Legends. Even still, there are a few bad choices people can make when it comes to how they set up their room — choices that can lead to the inducing of stress.

Perhaps chief among them is poor air circulation. You need to make sure that there is airflow present throughout the room. An air purifier, in tandem with the aforementioned humidifier, should help in this regard. You also need to wash your windows often to make sure everything stays fresh and clean.

Another issue you might have is doing work in your bedroom. Maybe you set your office up in your bedroom from the start, or maybe you never intended to work so often from your room — but it grew into a bad habit over time. Maybe, you aren’t even aware of it being an issue. However, we’d submit that keeping your bedroom a sanctuary of rest is vital. You need to associate it with pleasant, relaxing, calming things that help you unwind — not vice versa.

Finally, make sure you don’t have too much clutter in your bedroom. It might sound silly, but having a clean space can dramatically impact how much peace you get from being in your room. To remedy the bad habit of these piles forming in the first place, try to force yourself to put away items that you’ve used (including your clothes at the end of the day) when you are done with them. You can do it! We believe in you, and you’ll be better off for it.

Schedule Your Tour

We hope that you’ve found these tips to be practical and somewhat interesting at the same time. Ultimately, you need to find what makes you happiest and go with that, but we think these tips are a good place to start. If you are still on the hunt for a perfect place to live in Hickory, NC, we’d recommend typing in “Luxury apartments near me” into your smartphone and seeing what The Legends have to offer. Of course, you are already here on this blog, so there’s no need to do that. But you could, if you wanted to. Stress-Relieving Hobbies And Activities

As much as we love to highlight the wealth of positives we have on offer at The Legends, that is not the primary focus of today’s post. As the title no doubt gave away, we are discussing activities that not only help you relieve stress and anxiety that build up with typical, everyday lifestyle, but that are also able to be done in the comfort of your luxury apartment at The Legends. Truth be told, you can try out these activities no matter where you live — our point is that our lives are so busy and often anxiety ridden that it doesn’t hurt to get reminded of a few peaceful activities you can employ from time to time. Today’s post will continue where the last one left off, where we took the opportunity to discuss painting, puzzling, and listening to music as activities to help improve your state of mind!

We continue below.

Read A Book!

We have so little time left to our devices these days. Unless, of course, you are talking about your trusty mobile device, complete with every application and game known to mankind. It’s easy to get lost in your feed, passively scrolling through muck you aren’t even paying attention to. And while we don’t want to be presumptuous about how you spend your free time, we feel it’s safe to say that too much time on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even Netflix can lead to a vaguely unsatisfied life.

It’s not that we think the internet is evil or anything, it’s more that these passive activities can take away from legitimate times of creativity, reflection, and self-care. Reading a book qualifies for the latter two of those three, though it seems to be something of a lost tradition these days.

But it really shouldn’t be. Reading helps boost brain power, increase intelligence, improve your vocabulary, can make you more empathetic toward others, and might help reduce the chances of Alzheimer’s disease. What’s more, and more to the point of this blog, reading is a great way to relax, especially before bed. A 2009 study performed by researchers at Sussex University found that reading can reduce stress levels by as much as 68 percent! And maybe the best part of it is that you don’t have to read certain kinds of books in order to experience this stress-reducing benefit. As cognitive neuropsychologist David Lewis related to The Telegraph, “It really doesn’t matter what book you read, by losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world and spend a while exploring the domain of the author’s imagination.”

So instead of mindlessly scrolling through your feed and getting worked up about politics, why not read a classic? Sound like a bit much? That’s fine, read about something else. Read a Dr. Seuss book for all we care! Plus, reading a physical book (instead of reading on an e-reader) can help you wind down and get to sleep faster. Given the fact that most of us are at least minorly sleep deprived, this can only be a good thing!

Cook A Little Bit

Look, we fully understand what a tough job with a lengthy commute can do to your willingness to cook for yourself at the end of the day. You are cranky, your blood sugar is low, and you just want something simple for crying out loud. Honestly, you deserve a pat on the back for not succumbing to any number of the fast food restaurants you passed by on your way home.

Start small. Start with one meal a week, or maybe once every two weeks; just do what you think you can handle. Even if you have never even boiled water before, we are firmly in the camp that says if you are able to read, you will be able to cook (can you tell we’ve recently watched Disney’s Ratatouille?)

Cooking is a wonderful thing not only because you are likely to eat healthier (and ideally, tastier) food, but because cooking for yourself and others is a form of self-care. Though it might feel more like work than pleasure, at least at first, many people find working in the kitchen to be a creative, relaxing pastime. Plus, you’ll eat more mindfully when you mince the garlic and dice the onions yourself. You can even explore various cuisines while you are at it!

Here’s a fun game to try, assuming you have a significant other to play it with. Let them choose the kind of cuisine, and you can choose the dish. They say Chinese, you make Orange Chicken! They say British, you make Fish and Chips! And if you don’t have someone to play that game with, fret not. You can have more control and decide both for yourself!

Get A Pet!

We are a pet-friendly apartment complex in Hickory, here at The Legends. And this is good news for many of our to-be residents, seeing as how pets are one of the most wonderful things about being alive. Whether you are a cat, dog, or fish person, there is something to be said about being able to care of an animal. It just tends to make us feel good.

There are scientific reasons for this great feeling too. The Research Center for Human/Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine has found that humans interacting with animals can often increase a human’s level of the neurochemical oxytocin. Rebeccah Johnson, the head nurse involved with the study, says, “Oxytocin helps us feel happy and trusting…Oxytocin has some powerful effects for us in the body’s ability to be in a state of readiness to heal, and also to grow new cells, so it predisposes us to an environment in our own bodies where we can be healthier.”

Whether you live alone or not, having a pet you can look forward to spending time with can be a wonderful thing.

Hickory Activities And Community Information

In our last post, we may have gotten slightly carried away describing the many benefits of living at The Legends, to the extent that we weren’t able to fully describe what our region has to offer. We don’t want to make the same mistake twice, so, without further ado, read on if you are interested in finding out what makes Hickory one of the top places to live, according to Readers Digest!

The Hunger Games Was Filmed In Hickory

While Hickory is known as an up-and-coming city for young professionals and families alike, there’s a decent chance we might be seeing a borderline weird amount of The Hunger Games fanatics call Hickory home. Why? The blockbuster fantasy series The Hunger Games was filmed right here in Hickory. In fact, a decent number of Hickory residents were asked to be extras, or even actors in some cases, albeit in background roles. Some of the set pieces are still erect and able to be observed by fans who come from all over. So if you identify as being obsessed with The Hunger Games, Hickory just might be the North Carolina city for you.

A Massive Movie Theater

Those who were lucky enough to find themselves chosen to play extras in the movie series were likely pleased to find out that the very first film to be shown by Carmike’s BigD screen was in fact The Hunger Games itself! Carmike 15 BigD happens to be one of the biggest movie theaters in the entire state of North Carolina, with close to 600 high-back rocking luxury seats to boot. As you can probably already tell, we’ve been accused of being luxury-enthusiasts here at The Legends Apartments, so we are particularly fond of the seats, 70 speakers, and pure, digital projection. What’s more, there are only 30 cities in the entire nation with a BigD screen, and we’ve got one of them in Hickory!

Lenoir-Rhyne University

The Hickory-based Lenoir-Rhyne University is an esteemed liberal arts school that opened all the way back in 1891. The one-room school, which at the time was called Highland Academy, opened its doors to a whopping 12 students! Fast-forward to the present day, and you’ll find that the University with a rich tradition prides itself as a community of learning which seeks to educate the “wholeness of personality, true vocation, and the most useful service to God and the world,” as told on their dedicated site. For prospective students of Lenoir-Rhyne University, keep in mind that The Legends Apartments are just a ten-minute drive from the university. If you are looking for a little distance from campus that involves elegant living, we believe our Hickory luxury apartments for rent are worth considering.

A Blossoming Corporate Scene

The greater Hickory area plays host to some headquarters and corporate facilities for some notable organizations. From Google to Apple to Bed, Bath & Beyond, many folks who work at companies like these call The Legends their home. We are just a short drive away from the freeway (and downtown Hickory), so it’s an attractive place to call home no matter which way you cut it!

Additionally, Transportation Insight, an organization with an expertise in logistics, chose to make Hickory the site of its headquarters in 2014. Their reasons for doing so? The recent rejuvenation that our downtown has experienced. Quality of life matters to employees, and Transportation Insight was wise enough to factor in that variable, which led them to make a great decision in our humble opinion!

Beer Festivals In Hickory

Speaking of downtown Hickory, locals get to enjoy two beer festivals each year — Oktoberfest, a three-day outdoor festival with live music, carnival-style rides and games, along with craft vendors, and the Hickory Hops Brewer’s Festival, which boasts more than 50 microbreweries and their accompanying selections! Oktoberfest is great for the whole family, while we’ve heard of microbrewery aficionados traveling a fair distance to attend the Hickory Hops Brewer’s Festival! Whichever you prefer, both help make Hickory a great place to visit and an even better place to make home.

If you are looking for apartments near Hickory, NC, there’s one place that combines luxury with value. Schedule your tour at The Legends today.

Why Live In Hickory, NC? – Hickory Apartments For Rent

There’s a lot to like about living in Hickory, NC. The city, which is located in Catawba County, North Carolina, is home to a shade over 40,000 people who find themselves pleasantly nestled between Charlotte (to the southeast) and Cherokee National Forest (to the Northwest). Asheville, Spartanburg, Greenville, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem are all close by as well, making Hickory a perfectly placed mid-sized city for folks looking to live in a quaint yet bustling community.

While we might be slightly biased here at The Legends Apartments, we are comfortable with making the claim that you’d be hard-pressed to find a better mid-size community in central North Carolina. Don’t believe us? That’s fine — allow us to make our case as to why you should start looking for Hickory apartments for rent as soon as possible! Today’s post is dedicated to sharing some of the best aspects of living in Hickory, NC, so read on if you are in the mood to be persuaded, because we are in a convincing mood!

National Geographic Traveler Names The Best Small Cities In The U.S.

Let’s start off with a bang. As of January 2018, National Geographic Travel, which is known as the world’s most popular travel magazine, included Hickory on its list of 29 “Cities on the Rise,” due to its unique set of metrics and the magazine writer’s subjective choice. Of the “unique set of metrics,” in case you are interested, factors like green spaces, coffee shops, live music, “Instagrammable” moments, and other distinctive categories were taken into account. Among these categories are ten key superlatives which influence both visitors and residents of a city like Hickory. Those factors are listed below:

  • Most caffeinated (an abundance of coffee shops)
  • Most Instagrammed (counting hashtags)
  • Musically grooviest
  • Greenest parks
  • Most hipster-friendly (taking into account vintage stores, record shops, tattoo parlors, coffee shops)
  • Sudsiest (most breweries)
  • Best groomed (hair salons, cosmetic dentists, barber shops)
  • Most artsy (art schools, art galleries, art supply stores)
  • Musically grooviest (music venues, instrument stores, live music opportunities)
  • Meatiest (steakhouses, delis, butchers)
  • Most dog-friendly (pet sitting, pet stores, pet groomers, dog-friendly restaurants)

While we aren’t going to blow smoke and say that Hickory took home the first-place prize in every single category, we were able to walk away with being the most “hipster-friendly” small city in America. This is what the widely-read travel magazine had to say about Hickory, North Carolina:

A thriving 20th century manufacturing hub for furniture and textiles, Hickory now finds itself heading our list for its hipster-friendly offerings, from tattoo parlors to vintage clothing boutiques.  Craft-beer enthusiasts gather at the popular annual Hickory Hops festival featuring more than 50 microbreweries and live music.

Downtown Hickory Farmers Market

While we are talking about the best aspects of living in a small to mid-sized community, a seasonal farmer’s market is likely pretty high on most people’s list. Found in Union Square, Hickory Farmers Market is open from April 21st until November 24th! We love the opportunity to get in touch with others in our community, especially with those who support our livelihood whom we typically might take for granted. The opportunity to shake your farmer’s hand, task local chef’s unique creations, and maybe do a little jig to the live music while you are at it is one that most people can’t seem to pass up. Maybe that’s why they’ve decided to call Hickory their home! As their dedicated website states, “We promise the glory of a good harvest, select meats, NC coastal seafood, rice, honey, eggs, cheeses, baked goods, marinades, preserves & pickles, fresh cut flowers, transplants, potted plants, shrubs, fresh & dried herbs, heritage & artisan crafts, street foods and more—see? “more!” You have to come to get the meaning of “more.” It’s a soulful feeling and sense of belonging. Get greedy for more. Welcome!” We couldn’t agree anymore!

Olde Hickory Tap Room

As a rule of thumb, you know something is both old and classy when they spell the word “old” with an extra “e.” At least, that’s our opinion on the matter. Like a fine wine, the Olde Hickory Tap Room has aged fantastically well. Open seven-days-a-week, 365-days a year, the Olde Hickory Tap Room offers food, beer, wine, spirits, live music, and is just a couple of blocks away from The Olde Hickory Brewery, our local micro-brewery! If you are a fan of great music, libations, fun people, and delectable food, add visiting the Olde Hickory Tap Room to your list of “must-see Hickory activities.” Hey, that ended up rhyming!

Kiwanis Park

Though there are numerous parks and forests to visit that are just a short drive away, we wanted to highlight Kiwanis Park for its versatility of activities that it presents. Featuring two picnic shelters with grills, a tennis court, basketball court, four baseball fields, horseshoe pits, two playgrounds, a walking trail, and the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground (including a splash pad!). There’s plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy, whether you want to read a good book in the sunshine or play tennis and basketball on the same day!

With a 4.7 review rating on Google, it’s safe to say that Kiwanis Park is a local gem. Local Guide Victoria Hillman had this to say about this Hickory attraction just a couple of weeks ago in her five-star review: “Omg my kids truly enjoyed the splash pad and its big bucket and the park with the big slide we had a fun filled day…Oh it’s such a nice park people were very friendly.” We agree with your assessment, Victoria!

Hickory Museum Of Art

We could talk about the virtues of living in Hickory until we were blue in the face, if you haven’t been able to decipher that fact quite yet. However, for the purposes of letting our readers move on with their day and get to finding a Hickory apartment for rent (more on that later), we’ll have to limit our Hickory highlighting to one more venue — the Hickory Museum of Art.

Located in the same building as the Catawba Science Center on the SALT Block, visitors can witness Southern folk art and a variety of American art exhibits when they come to the Hickory Museum of Art. One of our favorite aspects of this museum is that the entire third floor is dedicated to Southern self-taught artists, capturing contemporary folk art which deals with themes that include memories, nature, collecting, believes, and others. Current exhibitions include the One Man Group Show: The Cartoon and Other Art of Matthew Diffee, Embracing A New Form: Paul Whitener’s Later Works, and the Catawba Valley Camera Club: 2017 Year-End Award Winners. There is more, but we must digress. So go and see the exhibitions for yourself! You won’t regret it.
