Our Name

The original name of Hickory was Hickory Tavern. As you can guess, the town began with a log tavern built in the 1850s that served people traveling on stagecoaches. The town took its name, only to drop “Tavern” three years after it was established.

Early 20th Century

Hickory continued to serve the transportation industry, including stagecoaches and railroads, until the first manufacturing plants came to town around the turn of the 20th century. Hickory still boasts some of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the United States.

Today

Hickory is known today for its proximity to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Lying close to I-40, many travelers stop to see the sights on their comings and goings and to enjoy the fine dining and downtown eclectic shops that Hickory is known for.
