Stress-Relieving Hobbies And Activities
As much as we love to highlight the wealth of positives we have on offer at The Legends, that is not the primary focus of today’s post. As the title no doubt gave away, we are discussing activities that not only help you relieve stress and anxiety that build up with typical, everyday lifestyle, but that are also able to be done in the comfort of your luxury apartment at The Legends. Truth be told, you can try out these activities no matter where you live — our point is that our lives are so busy and often anxiety ridden that it doesn’t hurt to get reminded of a few peaceful activities you can employ from time to time. Today’s post will continue where the last one left off, where we took the opportunity to discuss painting, puzzling, and listening to music as activities to help improve your state of mind!
We continue below.
Read A Book!
We have so little time left to our devices these days. Unless, of course, you are talking about your trusty mobile device, complete with every application and game known to mankind. It’s easy to get lost in your feed, passively scrolling through muck you aren’t even paying attention to. And while we don’t want to be presumptuous about how you spend your free time, we feel it’s safe to say that too much time on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even Netflix can lead to a vaguely unsatisfied life.
It’s not that we think the internet is evil or anything, it’s more that these passive activities can take away from legitimate times of creativity, reflection, and self-care. Reading a book qualifies for the latter two of those three, though it seems to be something of a lost tradition these days.
But it really shouldn’t be. Reading helps boost brain power, increase intelligence, improve your vocabulary, can make you more empathetic toward others, and might help reduce the chances of Alzheimer’s disease. What’s more, and more to the point of this blog, reading is a great way to relax, especially before bed. A 2009 study performed by researchers at Sussex University found that reading can reduce stress levels by as much as 68 percent! And maybe the best part of it is that you don’t have to read certain kinds of books in order to experience this stress-reducing benefit. As cognitive neuropsychologist David Lewis related to The Telegraph, “It really doesn’t matter what book you read, by losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world and spend a while exploring the domain of the author’s imagination.”
So instead of mindlessly scrolling through your feed and getting worked up about politics, why not read a classic? Sound like a bit much? That’s fine, read about something else. Read a Dr. Seuss book for all we care! Plus, reading a physical book (instead of reading on an e-reader) can help you wind down and get to sleep faster. Given the fact that most of us are at least minorly sleep deprived, this can only be a good thing!
Cook A Little Bit
Look, we fully understand what a tough job with a lengthy commute can do to your willingness to cook for yourself at the end of the day. You are cranky, your blood sugar is low, and you just want something simple for crying out loud. Honestly, you deserve a pat on the back for not succumbing to any number of the fast food restaurants you passed by on your way home.
Start small. Start with one meal a week, or maybe once every two weeks; just do what you think you can handle. Even if you have never even boiled water before, we are firmly in the camp that says if you are able to read, you will be able to cook (can you tell we’ve recently watched Disney’s Ratatouille?)
Cooking is a wonderful thing not only because you are likely to eat healthier (and ideally, tastier) food, but because cooking for yourself and others is a form of self-care. Though it might feel more like work than pleasure, at least at first, many people find working in the kitchen to be a creative, relaxing pastime. Plus, you’ll eat more mindfully when you mince the garlic and dice the onions yourself. You can even explore various cuisines while you are at it!
Here’s a fun game to try, assuming you have a significant other to play it with. Let them choose the kind of cuisine, and you can choose the dish. They say Chinese, you make Orange Chicken! They say British, you make Fish and Chips! And if you don’t have someone to play that game with, fret not. You can have more control and decide both for yourself!
Get A Pet!
We are a pet-friendly apartment complex in Hickory, here at The Legends. And this is good news for many of our to-be residents, seeing as how pets are one of the most wonderful things about being alive. Whether you are a cat, dog, or fish person, there is something to be said about being able to care of an animal. It just tends to make us feel good.
There are scientific reasons for this great feeling too. The Research Center for Human/Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine has found that humans interacting with animals can often increase a human’s level of the neurochemical oxytocin. Rebeccah Johnson, the head nurse involved with the study, says, “Oxytocin helps us feel happy and trusting…Oxytocin has some powerful effects for us in the body’s ability to be in a state of readiness to heal, and also to grow new cells, so it predisposes us to an environment in our own bodies where we can be healthier.”
Whether you live alone or not, having a pet you can look forward to spending time with can be a wonderful thing.
